Motorcross Safety

My son wants to participate in Youth Motorcross events. I’m not really thrilled with him riding a motorcyle. Not sure if the dirt bikes are more or less safe than street bikes. He’s not old enough for a street bike, so that doesn’t really matter, yet.
I’m looking for information on safety for motorcross events. I’d like to know the steps that these events holders take for safety.
I am also interested in what I can do to make him as safe as possible and what kind of gear he will need to do that.

As strictly for events, the course design and rules on speed and other issues will play the biggest part in safety. You should contact each tournament for information that directly relates to them, either before, or at the time of registration.
Some overall good safety tips include having a good helmet, proper fitting gloves and other protective gear. Also making sure the bike is in a good state of repair and the rider has a good understanding of how to operate the bike. That part will only come time and lots of practice.
If you have a retailer that sells motorcross bikes and accessories, they would be the best place to make sure that your rider has the right equipment and it fits properly.
They may even have knowledge of area courses and events. In some cases, they may even be the sponsor of events.
