Books in Public Domain

I learned in a class that a number of important and useful books are in the public domain, and can be used, republished, etc. with out permission from the author or publisher.
Does anyone know if there is a list or database of public domain books and media materials?

In the United States, a lot of times a work is not listed directly as is the public domain, but assumed to be because it’s original copyright expiring or if the work was originally published before 1923 is usually considered to be in the public domain. Most works produced and published by a government are usually in the public domain.
