Yes.
The most common way to become a commissioned officer is to earn a degree and be accepted into a commissioning program. Some officer enter this program after graduating college and entering the Marine Corps, while other serve as enlisted Marines, usually reaching the NCO rank of Corporal or Sergeant.
The most common way to become a commissioned officer with out a college degree is to enlist in the Marine Corps, reach the rank of Sergeant or higher, and apply to become a Warrant Officer. A Warrant Officer or Chief Warrant Officer has the ability to become a Limited Duty Officer and be commissioned as a Lieutenant or Captain. A Limited Duty Officer can be promoted no higher than the rank of Lt. Colonel.
The other way is the \”hip pocket\” promotion where you are just promoted to the commissioned rank. I don\’t think this even happens anymore. In fact the Limited Duty Officer is a pretty rare thing compared to all commissioned officers in the fleet Marine Corps.
