I want to get a small pet for my kids. We’ve talked about hamsters, gerbals, guinea pigs and fish.
I would love to get everyone’s suggestions and maybe even some stories of why to not choose one of these or another option.

There are a lot of different factors that would contribute to what pet or pets would be a good fit for you and your family. Those factors would include the age of your children, how much free time your family has to contribute to these pets, whether you have other pets in the house or not, and if there are any kind of allergies.
Pets like hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs, can have cages that can smell, and many can be noisy when running on their wheels.
Fish, lizards, crabs, snails and amphibians can be a great choice.
Once of the simplest and cheapest would be to get a beta fish for each one.
I have a soft place in my heart for Sea-Monkeys (brine shrimp) and triops (tadpole shrimp).
